We're back with another guide to talk all things Passenger gear, and this time we're focusing on men's shorts. Life’s about the stories made off the beaten path, and our gear is born from a love for the outdoors and a need to protect the places we play. We make clothes for the wanderers, the wave-seekers, and the trail-hitters, partnering with quality makers and treading a lighter footprint.

Whether you’re trekking through pine forests, catching a sunset at the shore, or grabbing a post-surf brew in town, choosing the right shorts makes all the difference. Here’s a rundown of our favourite cuts, how to find your perfect fit, and how to style them for wherever the road leads next.

The Main Types of Men’s Shorts

Finding the right pair can take a bit of time. There’s a whole range of styles out there, each built with a specific kind of day in mind. Let's break down the go-tos and figure out which ones deserve a spot in your pack for the next trip away.

1. All-Purpose Shorts

All-purpose shorts are just that… and should be your go-to versatile option. Designed for folks who value both comfort and function, these shorts are ideal for everything from weekend coffee trips to local trails. They’re made from lightweight, stretch fabrics that allow for easy movement, and most are equipped with quick-dry materials, making them perfect for time spent both in and out the water.

Take our Traveller All-Purpose Shorts. They’re built for the "what’s next?" moments. We’ve tucked in practical features like zip pockets so your keys and phone stay put while you’re scrambling up a ridgeline or dashing for a train.

From hidden trails to coffee runs, these are the ones you’ll reach for when you want zero fuss and all-day comfort, no matter where you end up.

2. Cargo Shorts

Cargo shorts are for the ones who like to be prepared for anything. They’re the ultimate mix of rugged style and pure utility, built with plenty of room for the essentials (and the non-essentials).

Whether you're navigating a new city or deep in the woods, those spacious pockets are there to stash your maps, keys, or those mid-hike snacks.

These shorts feature a relaxed fit that doesn’t restrict movement, made from durable materials like cotton or organic cotton, making them a great choice for long-lasting wear. For example, our Lakeside Cargo Cotton Shorts are made with 98% Organic Cotton, ensuring breathability and comfort during long days outdoors.

3. Chino-Style Shorts

Chino-style shorts have a smarter vibe, but can easily be dressed up or down thanks to their clean lines and classic fit. They’re versatile, comfortable, and ideal for packing when you’re not sure where the day might lead.

Chino shorts sit in that sweet spot where comfort meets a bit of structure. Minimal and versatile with a touch of stretch, our Vantage Organic Cotton Canvas Short makes light work of day-to-night plans and everything in between.

4. Trail Shorts

Trail shorts are purpose‑built for active outdoor use. Designed with hiking, trail running and off‑path exploring in mind, these shorts prioritise freedom of movement and weather‑ready performance without weighing you down. The quick‑dry fabric helps keep you comfortable if you encounter rain or sweat on the trail, and the lightweight design makes them easy to pack for overnight trips.

Our Men's Swift Trail Short is a great example of this style. Made from a recycled polyester and elastane blend, these shorts are lightweight, quick‑dry and designed to handle long days in the wild. An elasticated waistband with an interior drawcord ensures a secure, comfortable fit, while thoughtful details like easy‑grip zippers, mesh pocket bags and a key pocket mean you won’t be fumbling for essentials mid‑walk. They even pack into their own pocket for easy carry.

5. Swim & Hybrid Shorts

If you live life near the water, swim and hybrid shorts are a great shout to keep you covered for any escape. Made from lightweight, quick-drying materials like recycled fishing net material NetPlus, they allow you to go from coastal trail to surf to taco shack without an awkward beach change.

While these shorts are perfect for beach days and swimming, they’re also versatile enough to be worn as casual daywear. The adaptability of hybrid swim shorts, such as the Men's Drifter NetPlus® Swim Lined Shorts, makes them a great pick for beach days.

How to Choose the Right Shorts For You

Choosing the right shorts is the difference between a restless day and one where you’re free to just roam. To help you find that perfect pair for the miles ahead, here are a few things to keep in mind before you pack your bags.

1. Consider Length

Depending on the style you're going for, the length of your shorts can change your whole look. Generally, shorts that hit above the knee are the most universally flattering, but the ideal length totally depends on your height and personal preference.

Aim for a slightly shorter inseam if you want the hem to sit above the knee, and for the taller guys amongst us, look for longer inseams if you're worried about a cropped appearance.

2. Waist Fit Options

Waist fit plays an important role in comfort. Fixed waistbands offer a clean, structured look, while drawcords allow for more flexibility, especially if you’re hiking or trail running.

3. Fabric and Stretch

Choosing shorts with the right fabric gives that balance between staying comfortable and being able to actually move. For everyday styles, we're big on using organic cotton blends with a bit of stretch (elastane), allowing enough give so you aren't restricted. Check out the rest of our materials for more details.

Relaxed Fit vs Slim Fit

For ultimate freedom of movement, opt for designs with a relaxed fit and stretch fabrics like recycled polyester and elastane. These shorts are perfect for active days on the trail. For everyday wear, slimmer fits made with organic cotton provide a more casual, tailored look but may be less forgiving during longer hikes and tricky trails. For more details on sizing and fit, be sure to check out the size guide available on individual product pages.

What to Wear With Different Types of Shorts

A quick style guide to help you choose what to wear with each type of shorts, whether you’re into the oversized, baggy look or a more regular fit.

Styling All-Purpose Shorts

These shorts are designed to move seamlessly from active escapes to casual roams. Pair them with breathable organic cotton t-shirts for comfort all day long. For cooler days or evenings, layer with a fleece or zip hoodie. Neutral colours work well for easy outfit combinations, whether you’re hiking, road-tripping, or simply enjoying a day out.

Styling Cargo Shorts

Pair your cargo shorts with simple, neutral tees to keep the look balanced. On cooler days, a relaxed-fit sweatshirt works well with cargo shorts. Utility overshirts or lightweight jackets also complement the functional, utilitarian feel of cargo shorts.

Styling Chino-Style Shorts

Chino shorts are best paired with a simple organic cotton t-shirt or a plain heavyweight t-shirt for a laid-back look. For smarter days, add a lightweight shirt or overshirt, and layer with a hoodie on cooler evenings around the campfire.

Styling Trail Shorts

For a day hike or trail run, pair trail shorts with a moisture-wicking top to stay cool and dry. If you're heading out in cooler weather, layer up with a lightweight technical fleece or jacket to keep warm without restricting movement. Complete the look with a backpack for all your essentials and a cap for added sun protection.

Styling Swim & Hybrid Shorts

After a swim, pair your hybrid shorts with a relaxed-fit t-shirt or a towelling robe while you dry off. Layer with lightweight shirts and fleeces for extra warmth, and finish with some sandals if you’re in full summer mode.

Shorts for Different Escapes

Of course we're not saying you can’t wear trail shorts in the city or chino shorts on the trail, you do you. It can just be helpful to keep in mind what escapes you’re planning when choosing the right pair of shorts, as there are features of each style that suit certain scenarios best.

Everyday Wear and Travel

For everyday wear and travel, comfort and durability are key. Look for shorts like the Men’s Traveller All Purpose Shorts that offer versatility, breathability, and secure pockets for your essentials.

Outdoor Adventures

For chilled walks and slow days out in nature, choose shorts like the Men’s Apex Cargo Cotton Short that feature reinforced stitching, stretch fabric, and functional pockets for gear.

Another great shout is the Men’s Stride Trail Short, which offers lightweight, quick-drying fabric and flexibility of movement.

Summer Evenings and Social Plans

Chino-style shorts like the Men’s Drifter Organic Cotton Short are perfect for a smart-casual look on summer evenings. Whether you're at a BBQ or heading out for a drink, these shorts are an easy style win.

TL;DR - Think About Fit and Escapism

Choosing the right pair is really just about two things: how they fit and where you’re taking them. Here’s the practical breakdown:

  • Dial the Inseam: If you’re 5’8” or under, stick to a 6" or 7" inseam to keep the proportions right. If you’re taller, an 8" or 9" usually hits just above the knee. Anything longer tends to get in the way.

  • The Stretch Test: Look for a bit of elastane (around 2-3%). If the fabric doesn’t give when you squat or climb into a van, it’ll pinch.

  • A Matter of Fabrics: Organic cotton and linen are the call for high heat and staying dry. If you’re going to be in and out of the water or on a long, sweaty hike, go for recycled nylon or polyester hybrids as they won't chafe when they get damp.

  • Pocket Logic: For travel, zip pockets are essential for keeping a phone or passport secure. For everything else, make sure the side pockets are deep enough that your gear doesn't slide out the second you sit down.
