Layers Of Escapism: How To Reproof A Waterproof Jacket

The confidence to tighten toggles and stay dry.

Like all good outdoor gear, our waterproof jackets still need a little TLC to withhold the title of ‘go-to’ when packing for wet weather. Keeping you dry without a second thought—an investment that pays back in protection from precipitation.

Here we talk through our waterproof jackets for men and women, how to reproof a waterproof jacket and why it’s important. Head over to Layers Of Escapism: Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant for a full rundown of the range.

Why Reproof A Waterproof Jacket

Reproofing your jacket regularly will extend the life of the product, maintain its waterproof performance and reduce the need for a replacement.

We’re all for hilltop scrambles, coastal missions and forest rambles. Roams far-off and close to home shouldn’t be cut short because of the weather, think of rain as a refresh and reset to the system. But if the clouds do go full fright night, you want the confidence to tighten toggles and know you’re going to stay dry.

Waterproof Reproofing Methods

There are two common ways to reproof a waterproof jacket. First up we have the wash-in method, where you’ll need the Nikwax TX Direct Wash In Waterproofer and either access to a washing machine or basin to wash by hand.

The spray-on method requires even less gear, just the Nikwax TX Direct Spray on Waterproofer, hanger and cloth. Make sure your jacket is clean, pockets emptied and zips fastened when using either method.

How To Reproof A Waterproof Jacket (Wash-In)

No special requirements or fancy gadgets, just a bottle of Nikwax TX Direct and a washing machine. The best way to test if a jacket does needs reproofing is to run it under the tap to see if water beads on the material surface. If it does, you’re good. If not, it’s time for a reproof.

Be sure to reference the fabric type and product care instructions before reproofing—a ‘check twice, wash once’ mantra is advised when using the wash-in method.

A simple step-by-step on how to reproof a waterproof jacket at home using the wash-in method:

  1. Give the detergent tray a good scrub: To remove any buildup in the machine.

  2. First cycle: Chuck one or two items in and wash on a 30°C synthetic cycle and a slow spin.

  3. Add 100ml of Nikwax TX.DirectPer item to kickstart the waterproofing process.

  4. Second cycle: Run another 30°C synthetic cycle and a slow spin.

  5. Dry outside: When done, give it a shake and hang out to dry on the washing line. Use a clothes hanger when possible.

Note: Do not iron, tumble dry, or leave on the radiator as this can damage the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating.

How To Reproof A Waterproof Jacket (Spray-On)

A great option for roadtrips, longer-term travel and as a back-up to store with your outdoor gear. You’ll need a Nikwax TX Direct Spray on Waterproofer, hanger and clean cloth. Again, make sure you reference the fabric type and product care instructions before reproofing.

A simple step-by-step on how to reproof a waterproof jacket at home using the spray-on method:

  1. Clean your jacket: Always start with a clean jacket to ensure the process can work most effectively.

  2. Prepare the jacket: Empty pockets, fasten zips and drawcords.

  3. Hang the jacket: Hang your jacket on a clothes hanger as you would with a shirt, zipping it up to the top.

  4. Get spraying: Evenly apply the Nikax reproofing spray to all areas of the jacket.

  5. Wipe away any excess: Remove excess product with a clean cloth.

  6. Dry the jacket: Hang outside if possible, or tumble dry (if the fabric allows).

Summary

As a rule of thumb, reproof your waterproof jacket twice a year. A solid habit to get into—once at the end of summer and then again at the start of spring. For hardcore all-season roamers, four times a year wouldn’t be a bad shout. Refer to our How To Wash A Waterproof Jacket guide to make sure the jacket is clean, pockets emptied and zips fastened.
